A piece of steel from the World Trade Center has been moved to Mercer County Library’s Hopewell Branch for a year.

This is an annual tradition in Hopewell Valley that takes place on Sept. 11 in a World Trade Center Steel annual movement ceremony presented by the Hopewell 9/11 & Emergency Services Memorial.

After a procession of emergency vehicles escorted the steel to the library, it was followed by a brief ceremony. The steel can be viewed by residents and visitors inside the Mercer County Library branch in Pennington for the next year until late August 2025.

The movement ceremony is one of the traditions in Hopewell Valley to honor and remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The tradition to move the steel to a new location in Hopewell Valley began in 2012 with Merril Lynch becoming the first host. Other host locations have included – The Pennington School, Hopewell Valley Central High School (HVCHS), and Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell.

The effort for Hopewell Valley to receive a piece of steel from the World Trade Center was spearheaded by former Hopewell Township Police Chief Mike Chipowsky.
